President Uhuru Should Ensure IEBC is Independent Before He Retires - Wetangula

Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula on Thursday advised President Uhuru Kenyatta on how to fix the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) before the 2022 General Election.

Reacting to the President's State of the Nation address during a debate in the Senate, Wetangula faulted the president for the electoral body's shortcoming in delivering credible elections.

"Unresolved challenges undermining the independence of the electoral agency to conduct free, fair and credible elections have contributed to bloody polls every five years.

“The President should have committed that as he leaves office, he leaves the IEBC beyond reproach like Caesar’s wife,” Wetang’ula stated.

He added that the body currently was not in a position to hold a referendum as it lacked a quorum following the resignation of commissioners.

“People who are shouting for a referendum have been shouting that the IEBC is incompetent to hold an election. A referendum is an election.

"IEBC cannot conduct the referendum vote as proposed by a section of leaders in the country, the body's remaining two commissioners and their chairman cannot carry out such business after four of their counterparts resigned," Wetangula added.

The former Minority leader further stated that Uhuru's take on improved security in the country was not accurate as crime levels were still high.

“I heard the President say security has improved tremendously. I don’t know if he lives in this country,” he explained.

Wetangula called for the redeployment of Kenyans soldiers in Somalia to guard the border.

Earlier in the week, Wetangula advised that the commission be reconstituted before any calls to change the constitution are made.
