Uhuru & Raila Urged to Intervene on Lecturers' Strike Dilemma

President Uhuru Kenyatta and National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga have been urged to deal with Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed following the prolonged lecturers' strike.

Addressing the issue, Ugunja Member of Parliament (MP) Opiyo Wandayi noted that the CS should not be allowed to mess with the education docket.

"We will not allow the minister to mess with the education sector. If she can’t manage it, she better ask for assistance then quit," declared the MP.

He requested the Head of State and the Opposition leader to intervene on the issue and find a lasting solution to it.

Wandayi also asserted: "If the matter of lecturers remains in Amina's hands, parents and students should rest assured that the strike will last more than two years.

"In fact, if I were Amina, I would have asked the Prime Minister Raila Odinga to help because he has that capacity to arrest the situation," Wandayi added.

He noted that the former Prime Minister has proven that he is able to bring people together and find the ways out to any form of dispute.

The Chair of National Assembly Public Accounts Committee further exclaimed the CS's first assignment was to deal with the perennial lecturer's strike "but has proved her inability to man the docket".

"Her performance so far is below par. The strike has persisted for the months she has been in office. Sadly, there is no indication that the strike is ending any soon," the legislator added.

According to the lawmaker, no parent is happy that after paying school fees, his or her children are still at home because of issues that can be settled within a day.

The lecturers have been on strike for a little over two months now as the Ministry's efforts to end the strike last week hit a snag after lecturers rejected the offer claiming that it didn’t address the issue they raised.
