Train Derails at Changamwe in Mombasa, Affecting Traffic

There was a scare on Sunday morning when a train transporting fuel derailed and overturned at Kibarani in Mombasa County.

In a statement, Police stated that the train derailed on Saturday night at 11:35 PM.

The Train was carrying 250,000 litres of super petrol at the time of the accident.

The authorities were forced to block the road from Makande to Changamwe roundabout indefinitely.

A section of the Makupa Causeway was closed indefinitely in both directions as firefighters responded to the scene.

No deaths or injuries have been reported.

People heading to the airport and using the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) were affected by the road closure.

Commuters heading to Nairobi are advised to use the Kaloleni-Mavueni-Mtwapa route.

Police ordered residents of Kibarani slums to vacate the area.

Earlier in May, a Nairobi passenger train was hit a saloon car at Mutindwa crossing in Umoja Estate.

No casualties were reported but the personal vehicle was severely damaged and thrown beside the railway.
