Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jr Calls for Disbandment of NYS

Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jr on Sunday called for the disbandment of the National Youth Service (NYS) over financial scandals that have rocked the institution over the years.

Addressing journalists during the sidelines of the third Annual Legislative Summit, the Wiper Senator stated: "My view is that NYS should be disbanded and run by Ministry of Devolution because it has failed this country so many times."

He faulted the current system as it allocated billions of shillings to the body with little accountability that saw people lining their pockets without consequences.

The Senator noted that it wasn't enough that the top officials had been suspended and that more needed to be done to pass a message to all culprits engaging in corruption.

"This is the time to dissolve NYS. The suspension of its management is not enough… the people who have benefited from the funds should be in court today," he added.

He further disclosed that the mismanagement of NYS by senior officials had caused failure in the delivery of crucial services such as sanitation, sewerage and dams to Nairobi and Mombasa cities.

This, he explained was the major reason the cities were still dirty.

He urged President Uhuru Kenyatta to get serious with the war on graft as it could taint his legacy at the end of his term as the Head of State.

Senator Mutula conveyed that investigations into the previous scandal were still unconcluded and no one had been held culpable.

"It is very sad that the biggest corruption scandal in this country is in the youth docket. It is extremely disappointing," he exclaimed.
