NYS Scandal Suspects to Face 10 Criminal Charges Each

Details have emerged over the charges that will be faced by those indicted in the Ksh9 Billion National Youth Service (NYS) scandal.

According to a report by Citizen Digital, the suspects who were arrested en masse on Monday will each face 10 separate charges when they are arraigned in court on Tuesday.

Some of the charges that have been mentioned by officers at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) include abuse of office, failing to prevent crime, failing to adhere to procurement laws and stealing by servant.

17 suspects were arrested in Nairobi between Sunday night and Monday morning and booked at the Muthaiga, Central and Gigiri police stations in connection with the saga.

Director-General Richard Ndubai was among those arrested with sources close to the proceedings indicating that he would be arraigned in court on Monday afternoon.

Public Service and Youth Principal Secretary (PS) Lillian Mbogo Omollo evaded arrest and instead surrendered herself to the DCI for questioning.

She was later taken to the Muthaiga Police Station where other suspects were being held.

The two government officials stepped aside from office to allow for investigations on May 18, 2018, and later appeared before the National Assembly Public Accounts Committee (PAC) to explain how the funds went missing.

Four suspects were also arrested in Naivasha, among them Ms Ann Ngirita, the woman who was paid Ksh60 Million to supply nothing to the NYS.

Her mother Ms Lucy Wambui, sister Phyllis and brother Gicini were also taken in along with the suspects and were being held at the Naivasha Police Station.
