Anti-Corruption Protest Organizer Mildred Atty Owiso Goes Missing

Mildred Atty Owiso, activist and administrator of popular Facebook group Buyer Beware Kenya has gone missing in mysterious circumstances on Tuesday.

Owiso is also one of the main organizers of a nationwide anti-corruption protest planned for Thursday, 31st May.

Her activist counterpart and fellow Buyer Beware administrator Wanjeri Nderu told Kenyans.co.ke that Owiso's last communication came in the form of an incomplete text message sent on Whatsapp early on Tuesday.

In the text sent to a man only identified as Elvis at 8.04 am, Owiso disclosed that she had been picked up by unknown men in plain clothes who wanted to question her.

"Elvis, just been pulled by some plain clothed men. They say they want to question me and been asked to switch off my phone," her last text read.

Her friends and family have been unable to get in touch with her since then as her phone was switched off and they reported the dissapearance at Kilimani and Central Police Stations.

The protest which is scheduled to begin at Freedom Corner in Uhuru Park comes following the recent upsurge of mega-corruption scandals such as those at the National Youth Service (NYS) and National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB).

Nderu revealed that the protest was being organized by a team made up entirely of women and they were being trailed, harrassed and threatened.

She stated that it was worse in the counties where political tolerance was considerably lower.

Nderu, however asserted that the protest would go on with or without the organizers

"Tell Kenyans they need to stand with us because this is about Kenya and they canot intimidate all of us, We need to stand together," she affirmed.
