The Amount Kenya Has Lost on Scandals in 2018

President Uhuru Kenyatta's final term in office has been marred by a series of reports on corruption and embezzlement of state funds that have caused outrage across the nation.

The most prominent of the looting spree is the fresh National Youth Service (NYS) scandal where an estimated Ksh9 billion was lost in scandalous deals.

Following the NYS scandal, PS Lillian Omollo, NYS Director General Richard Ndubai and over 20 other suspects are facing charges in courts as Uhuru reiterated his commitment to the war against corruption.

Unfolding almost concurrently was the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) scandal where senior Government Officials are accused of embezzling Ksh1.9 million which had been set aside for the purchase of maize.

The mystery of the unending sagas continued after Youth Enterprise Development Fund (YEDF) lost an estimated Ksh600 million which was to be disbursed to musicians, filmmakers, and Uwezo Fund.

This saw angry youth storm the Fund offices demanding quick action by Chairman Ronald Osumba regarding the matter.

Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) equally got plunged into a Ksh647 million corruption scandal where seven senior officials are accused of meddling with the tendering process.

Kenyans also lost another Ksh2 Billion which was allocated to a project meant for a nationwide drive to plant trees in all public schools.

The scandal was exposed by Environment Cabinet Secretary Keriako Tobiko who reported to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) names of those accused of misappropriating the funds.

The project was launched by President Uhuru in mid-April and was meant to finance the training of children on tree planting, the creation of nurseries in public primary schools, and eventually turn 10 percent of all primary school land into forests.

This loss has been linked to senior Kenya Forest Service officials as tabled in a confidential report by the recent task force that inquired into forest resource management and logging activities in the country

Irregularities in the tendering process at the Kenya Power Company (KP) are alleged to have led to the loss of another huge chunk of public funds.

The above scandals mean the country has in 2018 lost over Ksh17 billion with all hopes now fixed on the office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Noordin Haji and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to expedite the prosecution of suspects and possibly recover the looted funds.
