Government Official to Head Moi Girls Board as School Reopens

Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Amina Mohamed has appointed Nairobi regional education coordinator John Ololtuaa to head the Board of Management (BOM) at Moi Girls School-Nairobi.

The 9-member interim BOM will now take over the running affairs of the institution which is set to reopen on Sunday after closing down for a week.

CS Amina further indicated that Kibra Deputy County Commissioner will join the BOM as an ex-officio member.

Other members of the BOM include Rose Ombeva (regional education office), Lydia Mutegi (sub-country director of education), and Benard Kimachas (TSC county director).

Education ministry headquarters officials in the BOM will include Gichuhi Ndegwa, Rashid Mohamed and Fidelis Nakhulo while the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will be represented by Lucy Mugambi and Cicely Musyoki.

The government has taken tough measures after reports of a student who was defiled in one of the school’s dormitories emerged.

This sparked outrage with parents demanding to take home their children or transfer them over safety concerns.

Among the measures taken was the deployment of five armed police officers to man the institution around the clock replacing security guards from a private company.

The ensuing public outcry saw the school's Principal Jael Muriithi apply for early retirement with pressure piling to have her sacked.

The ministry also dissolved the school's Parents, Teachers Association (PTA) while temporary business structures erected around the school were equally demolished in an exercise that turned chaotic.
