Tana River Governor Sued by Former House-help for Illegal termination

Moraa Omwansa, a former house help of Tana River Governor Hussein Dado, has sued him and his wife over illegal termination in October 2012.

Omwansa indicated that the couple failed to pay her salary upon the termination of her services.

She further noted that she was hired in 2009 and got a salary of sh4,000 per month, which according to her, was much less than what she deserved.

She told Judge Justice Onesmus Makau that the governor and his wife went against the labour laws by giving her a meager pay.

Through her lawyer Jackson Okwema, she told the court that she was in agreement with the couple that upon her termination, they would pay her 12 months salary, however, this did not happen.

Okwema further stated that his client did not receive one-month notice salary of Ksh10,656 in accordance to her contract and 12 months compensation salary of Ksh10,656 per year.

She also never received ksh25,820 for three years annual leave and severance pay for three years worth Ksh16,087.

The lawyer stated that Omwansa’s case was filed in October 2013 after the couple refused to meet her demands for unlawful termination.

He further indicated that the claimant was seeking for Ksh350,000 as reparation for the same.

In his defence, Governor Dado alleged that during her employment in his household, she was always paid on time.

He further refuted her claims that she received Ksh4,000 as monthly pay citing that she was paid Ksh8,900.
