Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru Supends 2 CECs

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has suspended two members of the County Executive Committee (CEC) over incompetence and inefficiency.

Roads Executive Peter Karugumi and Gender Executive Judy Kinyua were on Tuesday suspended for two months.

Towards the end of July, Waiguru put underperforming county executives on notice, announcing that she would not hesitate to sack them.

"Serving in this county government is a privilege and we owe it to the people of Kirinyaga, who have confidence in our ability, to deliver. There is, therefore, no excuse for failure,"  she noted at the time.

She further directed the executives to appear before the County Assembly when summoned to clearly explain the projects they were undertaking.

Waiguru is expected to deliver a talk at Chatham House in London tomorrow on Wednesday, July 3 titled Five Years of Devolution in Kenya: Towards Inclusion, Gender Equality and Accountable Governance.

“Waiguru will discuss her perspectives on the successes and challenges of implementing devolution, and Natasha Kimani will present findings from her research on gender responsiveness in county planning and budgeting," read an invite from the organizers.

She will speak in her capacity as Vice-Chair of the Council of Governors (CoG).

The invitation had sparked furore online as a section of Kenyans protested the move by Chatham House given that Waiguru has previously been implicated in corruption sagas such as the initial Ksh791 million scandal at the National Youth Service (NYS).

After receiving serious backlash through the online campaign #SomeoneTellChathamHouse, the institution came out to assert that the talk was not an endorsement of Waiguru.
