The Ministry of Education has revealed plans to have all students in Kenya wear the same school uniform.
Coming after the implementation of a uniform colour for school buses, Education PS Belio Kipsang stated that they would seek to have students wear uniform of the same colour and made with the same fabric.
He further promised that local textile industries such as Rivatex would be tasked with manufacturing the uniforms.
Speaking at the Moi University-owned Rivatex firm in Eldoret, Kipsang confirmed that details of the move were already being crafted.
“As we move towards having the same uniform and fabric in all our schools we want Rivatex to prepare so that they are able to play a role in the manufacture of the uniforms that will be required,” he noted.

Schools in Kenya have always come up with their own uniform policy, and the move would therefore represent a major shift.
A few countries such as Ghana have similar policies where all public school students wear similar uniform.
The uniforms are differentiated by the school emblems imprinted on them.
Parents and students will be interested in finding out what the move would mean for prices of uniforms given that schools have in the past been accused of using uniforms to fleece parents.
It also remains to be seen whether schools and the general public will welcome the proposal.
