Residents of Ndaranja Mbili in Nyandarua County woke up to a rude shock on Friday after they found the body of a government official stuck at the Malewa River Bridge.

It was alleged that Chief Paul Nyota of Malewa location drowned in the river after he spent the better part of the day on a drinking spree.

“The chief was spotted in a pub and we believed he was walking home at night when he drowned since the river has broken its banks,” he said.

The resident later alerted the police who moved the body to JM Kariuki Memorial Hospital Mortuary in Ol Kalou.

Kipiriri OCPD Charles Rotich confirmed the incident noting that investigations into the matter had began.

“This is a sad incident but we are investigating the matter to establish what really happened,” the police boss indicated.

According to the Standard, Paul had previously been on the spot over his drinking habits and had been served with warning letters over the same.

On June 28, Nyandarua Governor Francis Kimemia announced that the county would close at least 700 bars as part of efforts against alcoholism.

“We want to make this a working county and the only way to do so is to close some bars,” he noted.
