Gor Mahia in Trouble After Rejecting Medals at CECAFA Kagame Cup

Gor Mahia, arguably Kenya's biggest football club, faces possible sanctions and fines from the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) after they declined to receive bronze medals at the Kagame Cup.

Gor had just edged out Zanzibar's Jeshi la Kujenga Uchumi (JKU) in the third place play-off 3-0 pocketing prize money of Sh1 Million.

The players, however, refused to go on the dais to receive the bronze medals for unknown reasons.

Guests and officials including the Tanzanian Minister for Sports and the Speaker of the National Assembly were kept waiting for over five minutes.

The tournament's organizers eventually decided to call the runners up Simba SC who lost to Azam 2-1 in the final.

This year's Kagame Cup tournament was a strange one for Gor, with the team having also rejected the hotels and dressing rooms they were allocated.

The dressing room situation was alleged to be due to fears of witchcraft.

CECAFA Secretary General Nicholas Musonye expressed dissapointment at Gor's snub but refused to disclose the actions that would follow, if any.

He promised that the committee would meet and later announce resolutions at a media briefing.

"The committee is questioning their behaviour and asking why. The resolutions of the Committee will be known tomorrow," he stated.
