Kenya Power MD Ken Tarus Suspended

The Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) Board has suspended the Managing Director after a crisis meeting was held on Monday morning.

The decision was taken after recommendations by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji that he be prosecuted in a court of law.

The board held the crisis meeting to fill the positions of managers who have been arrested over Ksh 4.5billion graft scandal.

After the meeting, Kenya Power confirmed that the issues under investigations related to supply of transformers and Labour and Transport contracts.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed that Tarus surrendered on Sunday evening and was being held at Muthaiga Police Station pending arraignment in court.

The company’s former MD Ben Chumo, General Manager for Regional Coordination Peter Mwicigi and legal secretary Beatrice Meso were arrested on Saturday morning by DCI officers over alleged economic crimes.

Other who were apprehended are John Ombui, former supply chain manager and Peter Mungai Kinuthia who was in charge of business strategy.

They are set to be charged with conspiracy to defraud, conspiracy to commit an economic crime, willful failure to comply with law relating to procurement, abuse of office and conspiracy to defeat justice.

The DPP ordered the arrest of the firm’s officials over the alleged procurement of defective transformers and irregularities in issuing contracts to 525 companies.

Kenya Power has, however, assured Kenyans that its operations won't be hindered by the arrest of the managers.

“The board wishes to reassure members of public, customers an all stakeholders that operations of the business have not and will not be affected,” board chair Mahboub Mohamed indicated.
