Senate Fines Governor Salim Mvurya Ksh200,000 for Ignoring Summons

Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya was on Monday fined Ksh200,000 after he failed to honour a summons issued by the Senate Committee on County Public Accounts and Investment.

The committee imposed the fine after the governor placed his submissions late and failed to appear in person.

The senators had requested the governor's presence in connection with a report prepared by Auditor General Edward Ouko.

Mvurya and 13 other governors are required to submit replies to audit queries raised by the auditor general on county spending.

Other governors required to appear before the committee are Mike Sonko (Nairobi), Hassan Joho (Mombasa), Mwangi wa Iria (Murang’a), Cornel Rasanga (Siaya), Patrick Khaemba (Trans-Nzoia), Moses Lenolkulal (Samburu) and Martin Wambora (Embu).

John Lonyangapuo (West Pokot), Granton Samboja (Taita-Taveta), Francis Kimemia (Nyandarua), Abdi Mahamud (Wajir), Mohamud Ali (Marsabit) and Ali Korane (Garissa) will also meet the committee on diverse dates.

The committee kicked off its probe into the flagged issues on Monday and is expected to continue according to schedule.

Concurrently, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i and his Environment counterpart Keriako Tobiko appeared before the Ad-hoc Senate Committee investigating the May 9 Solai Dam tragedy.

"We recommended in that in the interim the CS must suspend the National Government officials who have been seen to participate in a partisan manner in the question of Solai.

"We do not understand how the County Commissioner can be the one issuing out payouts on behalf of the owner of the dam while the same government is investigating the owners of the dam," observed the committee chair, Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo.
