Stunned MP Protests 104K Power Bill

Mbooni MP Erastus Nzioka has vehemently protested a Sh104,481 power bill for his home.

In a letter to Kenya Power, a stunned Nzioka described the bill as 'irrational, unusual, shocking and unacceptable'.

He attached records indicating that from an average bill of Sh3000 in February 2017, he was charged for power consumption worth Sh104,481 in March and April.

As of April 30th 2018, his account showed Sh166,943 was owed to Kenya Power.

Nzioka further questioned the results of a Zera test undertaken on his meter which concluded that his billing between the months of January and April was "correct and payable."

Following Nzioka's complaint, his consumption was reduced by 1,758 units worth Sh58,883.

Nzioka sought a "possible waiver" of the bill as he demanded clarification on the figures.

He questioned how he could have consumed the said units, reiterating that electricity in his home was used primarily during the evenings for common uses.

“I stay in a moderate house with one family and have never gotten such high bills before. In a normal house where consumption is routine and with basic items like iron box, fringe, bulbs, TV and Radio the monthly consumption should be the same with minor differences...

“The above consumption is irrational, does not portray any pattern, is unusual, shocking and unacceptable for a modest house consumption. In my house, electricity usage is mainly in the evenings,” the frustrated lawmaker wrote.
