Process of Driving Licence Renewal in Kenya

Manual renewal of driving licences in Kenya was stopped in 2014 when the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) made it possible to access the service on an online government portal.

Previously, motorists would visit banks and Huduma centres which had partnered with the authority to renew licences.

Here are the steps to follow when renewing a driving license online:

  1. Sign up for an account or log into the e-Citizen platform using your e-mail address or national ID number and password.
  2. Once logged in, go to the NTSA tab for online renewal of driving licences in Kenya.
  3. Click on Submit Application, then Driving Licenses.
  4. Options available when renewing one's license include a three-year license renewal that costs Ksh1400 or a one-year license at Ksh600. In addition, NTSA charges a convenience fee of Sh50 on top of the renewal charges.
  5. Double check to ensure the license renewal details you have submitted are accurate.
  6. Click Apply Now and hit Submit.
  7. Select your preferred mode of payment. The platform allows for payment via various mobile money platforms as well as debit or credit cards.
  8. Print your driving renewal license slip.

Should you experience any challenges while making the application, contact official representatives to guide you through it using the following numbers; +254 709 932 300 or +254 20 6632 300.

The site also features a live chat service with customer service representatives.

The authority officially rolled out the new generation driving licences in 2018 in a bid to improve records kept on motorists.

The new licences include, among other things, Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) pin, ID number and blood group of the driver.

An electronic chip will contain drivers' information and a record of their traffic offences.

“We are in discussion with insurance industries. If you are a high-risk driver, the premiums you pay must be high

“If you are a driver and you want to seek employment somewhere, your employer will know your habits on the road. If you commit serious offences, then your licence will be withdrawn,” explained NTSA Director-General Francis Mejja.
