COTU Now Wants County Assemblies Scrapped

On Thursday, the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) asked the government to scrap off county assemblies.

COTU Assistant Secretary-General Benson Okwaro asked the government to disband county assemblies to save ordinary Kenyans from paying huge amounts in taxes.

“We agree that government needs funds to run this country and to get the funds we need to act in a manner that will not interfere with the little pay Kenyans get,” he indicated.

He further noted that they are too many members of parliament and there is a need to reconsider a constitutional amendment.

“Do we really need MCA’s? Too much money is spent on them,” he mentioned.

“It is unacceptable for employees to pay all these officials while their number can be reduced,” Okwaro continued.

Atwoli’s deputy also commended President Uhuru Kenyatta for his renewed energy in dealing with corruption.

“It is the correct way to go because we know most of the hard earned money by citizens is lost to corruption,” he asserted.

For every Ksh100 spent by county governments, Ksh40 is used to pay staff salaries.

MCAs are among the highest paid politicians in Kenya with benefits and allowances in excess of Ksh 300,000 per month.

According to Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC), they earn a basic salary of Ksh Sh123,750 but after factoring in allowances, they take home approximately Ksh 500,000.
