President Uhuru Most Desired Public Figure

President Uhuru Kenyatta is the most admired public figure among a majority of Kenyan women, a study has revealed.

The research carried out to help define Kenyan women socially, behaviourally and economically puts President Kenyatta ahead of Raila Odinga, Margaret Kenyatta and Wangari Mathai as a role model.

According to the research conducted by Consumer Insight Africa, among the top ten role models for Kenyan women, only four are ladies while two (Nelson Mandela and Barrack Obama) are foreigners.

In the report released on Tuesday, the First Lady Margaret Kenyatta also makes it to the top four most revered personalities with her celebrated efforts in the Healthcare sector.

In their findings, Consumer Insight noted men have a lower attraction to the four most venerated women implying Kenyan women "lace their admiration with a tinge of gender bias."

"The easiest way to earn the esteem of Kenyan women, it seems, is to be a do-gooder. Wangari Mathai and Margaret Kenyatta are in the top 4 no doubt because of their celebrated works," states the report.

The research also found that more women were now having their eyes on actualizing property inheritance rights.

At least 84 percent of Kenyan women, the report finds, have approval for women inheriting property.

Dwelling further into stereotypes associated with women, the report gives a 59 percent thumbs-down for stay-at-home tendencies.

"Other big losers are arranged marriages, marrying in order of birth and female circumcision.... respect for elders and male circumcision have out-of-the-roof approval ratings from the women," the report reveals.

According to Consumer Insight Kenya MD Ndirangu Maina, the independent report is targeted at helping individuals and organizations better understand women and their impact on the social and economic fabric of the country.
