Kisumu Health Minister Achie Alai Issues Apology to Journalists

Kisumu Health minister Achie Alai on Thursday issued an apology to members of the press after a remark she made during a press conference.

Mrs Alai apologised for referring to a question from a journalist as "silly" during a different press statement she delivered on Wednesday.

The Health County Executive Committee member explained that she had not intended to mock journalists as posted on some social media platforms.

"Let me express my apologies for my remarks yesterday, in reply to a question posed by a journalist at the Press conference at the County Government office.

"My remark was not founded on disrespect nor was it intended to demean the journalist," she stated.

The minister had responded curtly to a question by a journalist concerning the numerous overseas trips made by Governor Anyang' Nyong'o.

"That gripe needs to stop, it’s silly," she responded to the question by a journalist from Kisumu Journalists Network.

The network reacted to the cutting comment with a letter that demanded an apology, terming the executive's remarks as reckless.

She admitted that the comment was out of place and assured journalists that they were allowed to ask her any question concerning the administration.

The governor spent a majority of months during the first half of 2018 in the United States receiving treatment for his hip. The governor has also been vocal about his battle with prostate cancer since he was diagnosed in 2010.

"We have not invested enough in the purchase of equipment and the training of enough specialists to undertake these treatments in Kenya. Treatment abroad is very expensive," he remarked during a past interview with Daily Nation.
