Political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi has pointed out three tactics that will see Deputy President William Ruto outsmart the handshake deal between President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga.
Mutahi opines that given that Ruto was politically mentored by former President Daniel Moi, he should borrow a few survival tactics from the shrewd politician.
"The Moi Cookbook of Politics taught us a few lessons. One; They must never see you coming. If Ruto opposes the unity government, he must appear to be supporting it nevertheless," the analyst elucidates

The second tactic according to the scholars in Mutahi's weekly show, The Fifth Estate, is that Moi taught that "Do unto others before they do you."
In this regard, the columnists indicate that Ruto should deal with his political adversaries before the handshake deal gets a chance to bring him down.
"Lastly, Mzee Moi taught us that you should speak with a small voice but carry a big stick. The lesser you speak, the bigger the stick," the scholar quips.
In his view, talking less about the handshake deal gives Ruto an upper hand in ensuring that the Uhuru-Raila merger does not wear out his 2022 political fortunes.
Mutahi further indicates that in his view, the country needs to formalize the unity government structure to ensure that all parts of the country are represented.
The political analyst elaborates that given that Raila garnered 6.7 million votes (44.74 percent), nearly half of the country could not have been mistaken in voting for him for the Presidency.

"There is a difference between the Unity Government in 2002 and the Coalition Government in 2007. Politics is governed by the law of opposites. To win you have to lose first.
"A Coalition is a forced government that happens at zero option. A unity government is formed out of sheer necessity," Mutahi iterates indicating that with the blessings of Uhuru and Raila, the Parliament would easily expand the executive to accommodate all Kenyans.
