Education CS Amina Mohamed Swings into Action After School Bus Accident

Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed has on Sunday evening dispatched a team of senior ministry officials to Mwingi, Kitui County after a grisly accident claimed lives of ten pupils.

The accident that also left 28 St Gabriel's Boarding Primary School pupils injured occurred minutes to Saturday midnight as the pupils, their 3 teachers and matron were returning from a Mombasa trip.

"The Ministry has dispatched senior officials to Mwingi ensure that the pupils have access to good healthcare," CS Amina indicated.

The Education CS was speaking at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) when she visited two pupils that are undergoing treatment at the facility while two others are at Nairobi Hospital.

Amina further revealed that four pupils who had sustained critical injuries were recuperating and are now out of danger.

Several leaders including the President Uhuru Kenyatta have condoled with the bereaved families: "It is indeed sad and unfortunate that we lost those we look forward to securing the future of our great nation."

On her part, Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu on Sunday afternoon took part in interdenominational prayers at the scene of the accident.

We have joined area residents for a prayer at Kanginga in Mwingi. We urge all drivers on our roads to exercise caution," Ngilu stated.

On his part, Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka stated: "It is extremely saddening that 10 young souls met their untimely end in a road tragedy just when their lives were starting to bloom and when had so much hope and promise. It is devastating; No words make sense to the grieving parents nor even to us now".

Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua equally eulogized the pupils who perished: "May God strengthen and comfort the families during this difficult time of grief. Poleni sana kwa msiba (Sorry for the loss)".

"I urge the National Government to enforce the ban on school children's night travel. In the same spirit, my government will soon announce strict timelines that schools in Machakos County must adhere to regarding travel for students," Mutua indicated.
