ODM MP Takes Battle Against DP William Ruto to Court

Kisumu Central MP Fred Ouda is set to move to court seeking the Judiciary's interpretation of his unsuccessful petition that would have seen Deputy President William Ruto barred from running for Presidency in 2022.

Addressing the press in Kisumu on Monday, Ouda reiterated his belief that the positions of President and Deputy President are tied under the auspices of the Presidency itself, and, therefore, neither of the holders should go for any of the two positions upon completion of their ten-year stint in office.

His petition had sought to have the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC) recommend amendments to Article 137 and 142 of the Constitution.

The proposed amendments would also see Governors and their Deputies affected in the same way as they would be barred from contesting in future elections for either of the positions.

Ouda maintained that he would not be intimidated by his fellow lawmakers who unanimously rejected his motion deriding it as 'a waste of time'.

” I will not be intimidated by the comments that were made by Parliamentarians when the motion was rejected,” he stated.

Ouda further pledged to table the motion again before Parliament after the statutory 60-day period lapses.

“He is trying to say the DP will not contest in 2022. This is a wild dream. Ruto will be on the ballot in 2022. This House should not be used for such matters,” Majority leader Aden Duale had stated.

Ouda claimed that his petition was not targeting Ruto, but noted on an interview with KTN that he was opposed to many of the Deputy President's actions.

In particular, he singled out Ruto's admitted ownership of Weston Hotel and the teargassing of Lang'ata Primary School pupils who were protesting an alleged land-grab of the school playground by the hotel.
