Kisumu Central MP Fred Ouda Wants Constitution Amended to Block Deputies from Running for Presidency

Kisumu Central MP Fred Ouda has announced his next move following the National Assembly's unanimous rejection of his petition that would see Deputy President William Ruto barred from running for Presidency.

Now, Ouda has changed tack announcing that he will instead present a constitutional amendment seeking to enshrine the same in law.

His petition sought to have the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC) recommend amendments to Article 137 and 142 of the Constitution so the positions of President and DP, as well as Governor and Deputy Governor, would be completely tied to each other.

If successful, Deputy Governors would also be unable to contest Gubernatorial elections once their terms were up.

Presidents and Governors would also be blocked from going for the positions of Deputy President and Deputy Governor respectively in future polls.

National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale had termed the petition as 'a waste of time' as he accused Ouda of plotting to stop Ruto's planned 2022 Presidential bid.

In an interview with KTN News on Friday afternoon, Ouda maintained that he had no personal agenda against Ruto.

He insisted that he wanted the laws in place for posterity, claiming that the constitutional 'grey area' could lead to anarchy in later years.

Ouda insisted that he was only opposed to Ruto's actions, citing the DP's ownership of Weston Hotel in Lang'ata, Nairobi and the teargassing of Lang'ata Primary schools who were protesting against alleged grabbing of their school playground by the hotel.

"I am not looking at them... someone like Duale is a Ruto-maniac.

"I'm going to work on this thing day and night to make sure that now I'm bringing it as an amendment before JLAC and the floor of the house," he stated.
