Chirau Ali Mwakwere Arrives at EACC Offices After Swazuri Arrest

Former Kwale Gubernatorial aspirant Chirau Ali Mwakwere arrived at Ethics and Anti-Coruption Commission (EACC) Headquarters in Nairobi shortly after National Lands Commission (NLC) Chairperson Muhammad Swazuri was arrested on Saturday.

The former Cabinet Minister was initially denied entry at Integrity Centre and told the press that he was only there to know about Swazuri's situation as they both hail from Kwale County.

"I'm a Kenyan and if there is any Kenyan with a problem it is my right to know what that problem is. I come from Kwale and if anybody from Kwale has a problem I need to know what that problem is.

"I am a Digo from Kwale and if a Digo has any problem I need to know what that problem is because I belong to that community," he stated.

He disclosed that he had received several phone calls from home that Swazuri was being held, asserting that he only sought to establish the details of Swazuri's arrest and whether he was safe.

Swazuri and six other individuals were arrested in connection with the compensation for land acquired during construction of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).

The arrests came barely hours after the DPP confirmed that he had consented to charges against Swazuri and other suspects.

DPP Noordin Haji himself was spotted making his way to Integrity Centre after the arrests were made.

Others who were arrested include Kenya Railways boss Atanas Maina and NLC secretary Chavangi Aziz Tom.

NLC directors Salome Munubi (valuation and taxation) and Francis Mugo (finance) were also nabbed in the Saturday morning operation.
