Three men were on Sunday taken down separately after stealing a car owned by an Uber driver in Athi River.

In the incident that happened at Kihunguro area in Ruiru, one of the men was killed after seeking refuge in a church.

According to reports, the suspects engaged in a shootout with the police after noticing they had been trailed and were badly injured.

One of the suspected robbers fled to a nearby Assemblies of God Church after being shot three times and requested the worshippers to hide him.

Minutes later, officers who were hot in pursuit stormed the compound during the service which had now been temporarily stopped since the man was bleeding profusely.

The church pastor Pastor Peter Maina told the Star that he attempted to plead with the police to spare the suspect who had surrendered.

However, his words fell on deaf ears as the police dragged him outside and shot him much to the horror of the faithful witnessing the shocking incident.

The incident was confirmed by Ruiru police boss James Ng’etich who added that one other suspect died during the shootout while another succumbed on his way to the hospital.

The four-man gang had allegedly carjacked a taxi driver who had been called to ferry a sick client in Athi River.

They bundled him in the back seat and drove in circles before abandoning him unhurt.

On Sunday, the police traced the car, which was fitted with a tracker, to the section of Thika Road where they laid an ambush.
