Didmus Barasa Makes New Declaration on Parliament Bribery Scandal

Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa who blew the whistle on a shocking bribery scandal in the August house held a press briefing on Tuesday concerning the saga.

Barasa had earlier accused Wajir Woman Representative Fatuma Gedi of leading a group of MPs in bribing their counterparts with as little as Sh10,000 to shoot down a report on contaminated sugar that laid the blame on Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich and former Industrialization CS Aden Mohammed.

The lawmaker declared that he was "willing to pay the ultimate price to say the truth" especially as the he comes from the Sugarbelt region whose farmers are the most affected by massive imports of sub-standard sugar.

Barasa further dismissed Gedi's demand that he apologise for linking her to the bribery, reiterating that Gedi oversaw the mad rush for envelopes full of cash by lawmakers shortly before they were to discuss the report.

"I refuse to bow down to her calls that I apologize over this. I stand by what is true.

"And this is the truth. Mheshimiwa Gedi captained the bribing of MPs to bring down that report that would have held two cabinet secretaries responsible," his statement read in part.

Barasa asserted that he was out to do what was right and not what was popular.

He further promised to openly address the scandal regardless of any proceedings or statutes that could be used to gag him.

The MP explained that if such rules were enforced, then anti-corruption laws should also be enforced with similar zeal.

"I want to tell people that I won't be intimidated by sections of the law that bar me from commenting on such matters..because if that is the case we should also be quoting those sections of the law that don't allow people to be corrupt," Barasa stated.
