Former Limuru Legislator George Nyanja Sought by Police After Shooting at Nairobi County Workers

Former Limuru Member of Parliament George Nyanja is being sought by the police after he fired shots in the air to stop the demolition of some business premises in Karen.

The Wednesday afternoon incident occurred after bulldozers from City Hall arrived at the scene and started bringing down the structures.

Nyanja soon after arrived and when an argument ensued, the former MP drew his gun and fired in the air forcing the county workers to run for their lives.

Some of the workers sustained minor injuries while fleeing, as reported by the Nairobi County Chief Media Officer Elkanah Jacob.

"My staff have sustained serious injuries as they scampered for safety and psychological torture. We have recorded a statement at the Karen Police Station and we invite the DCI and Kenya Police to quickly arrest the individual for misuse of a firearm," Elkanah stated.

Jacob went on to explain that the premises were constructed without the County Government’s approval and that area residents were even opposed to the development.

"The County Government had given the owners of all illegal structures notice from Embakasi to Karen and when they failed to comply with the orders, we moved in today," he reported.

Early in August, Nairobi County enforcement officers descended in Lavington and demolished more than 100 illegal structures and arrested 120 traders operating the businesses.

The Nairobi County's Head of Inspectorate, Peter Mbaya, indicated that the Karen demolitions were part of the ongoing exercise by the county government to rid the Capital of illegal structures across the 17 sub-counties.

Mbaya added that the operation would go on until his team clears all the illegal structures in the county.
