Taj Mall to Be Demolished Next Week

Demolition of Taj Mall building has been moved to next week on Monday after expiry of the notice on Thursday.

Owners of the now renamed Airgate Centre, had been given until August 30 to bring it down.

The task force operations manager Chief Julius Wanjau stated that the owners had been given ample time to comply with the notice before they move in to do the job themselves.

The postponement was attributed to the task force decision to concentrate on completing the demolition process of the other buildings that they had already started on.

“So far we have been able to flatten one side of the twin Southend mall and by Saturday we should have entirely flattened everything. We do not want to do shoddy work so we would rather take even years if necessary but ensure that by the time we move on to the next building we have completed what we set out to achieve,” remarked Wanjau.

Wanjau pointed out that the twin building had posed a challenge due to its height and required a calculated approach to completely flatten it.

A report by the Standard quoted the date set as Monday but the task force manager noted that the exercise could also be pushed to Thursday the same week.

“Let us first deal with the building at hand then from Monday move on to the next one. The demolition of Airgate could even take place on Thursday but we will communicate on the same,” stated the Operations Manager.

Owner Ramesh Gorrasia refused to comment on the issue.

“I cannot comment on the matter today. Call me next week I will give my comments,” uttered the Taj Mall owner.

The Church House of Grace and the cafeteria opposite the prestigious building were, however, brought down on Thursday in accordance to the notice issued to them.
