Officer Rejects Ksh10 Million Bribe in Idris Mukhtar Attempted Murder

An officer revealed to his superiors that he had been offered Ksh10 million bribe to mess up the probe on the attempted murder of former Garissa Finance executive Idriss Mukhtar.

Reports by the Daily Nation stated that the officer had received threats to his life which saw him sent on leave.

When the officer reported the plot to his boss, DCI boss George Kinoti ordered the case be taken up by the Homicide Investigations Unit.

He then appointed five officers to work closely with the Special Crimes Prevention Unit and the Flying Squad to unearth the details of Idriss’ shooting.

The new team of detectives to probe the attempted homicide were allegedly directed by DCI  Kinoti to carry out investigations from his office where he can monitor the case closely.

The investigation, however, was dealt a serious blow when the self-confessed shooter, David Mwai, died in his cell at the Parklands police station with officers claiming he killed himself with a piece of cloth cut from his jacket.

On Sunday, the family of Idriss led by his father Dr Aden Mukhtar stated that their son was shot because of his fight against corruption in the devolved government.

“He questioned the academic qualifications of Governor Ali Korane. That is why some people wanted him dead,” Dr Mukhtar insisted.

He added that he was aware of the threats to the life of his firstborn son, and had advised him to report the matter to the police.

Dr Mukhtar revealed to the press that people started calling his son blackmailing him to send them money in exchange for information about a murder plot.

He raised his concern over the pace of the investigations into his son’s attempted murder, the release of suspects and the circumstances leading to the death of the self-confessed gunman at Parklands Police Station on Thursday.

“Within 10 days of the shooting, detectives had done a lot of work. After the arrest of Governor Korane, the investigations suddenly ground to some halt,” Dr Mukhtar stated.

“We have been informed that the first investigators were withdrawn and the matter has been taken over by Directorate of Criminal Investigations,” he added.
