Nairobi County Secretary Peter Kariuki Arrested

Nairobi County Secretary Peter Kariuki was arrested on Tuesday morning and taken to the holding cell at Milimani Law Courts.

The county secretary was arrested under unclear circumstances and later presented before Justice Chacha Mwita.

A source revealed that the police were effecting a warrant of arrest issued for Kariuki.

Kariuki joins a list of county officials that have been apprehended in the course of this year.

In August, a Malindi court issued a warrant of arrest against four senior Tana River County officials accused of committing procurement irregularities.

The warrant was issued after the suspects failed to show up in court.

Ethics Anti-Corruption Commission(EACC) failed to trace the suspects prompting the Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Vincent Monda to request for the warrant.

Six out of the ten suspects arrested denied the charges made against them.

A month before, three Busia county officials alongside Governor Sospeter Ojaamong were charged over criminal charges.

The three moved to court to file a petition pointing out the unfair discrimination to suspend them and leaving the governor to walk free.

In November last year, Nairobi County officials were suspended on the grounds of working under instructions to sabotage Governor Mike Sonko’s government.

According to County Secretary Leboo ole Morintat, the two allowed hawkers to block shops in the central business district.

The two county officials were further accused of being bosses to seven county inspectorate officers who were arrested over claims of stealing from traders.

“I cannot allow officers to sabotage the county on handling hawkers’ issue. They have been suspended to pave way for investigations,” stated Governor Sonko.

Sonko acted after complaints by business owners on hawkers interfering with their businesses.
