Opposition leader Raila Odinga on Tuesday met with former gubernatorial candidate Peter Kenneth at his Capitol Hill office.
In a message sent out on Twitter, Raila indicated that following the discussion on the legitimate concern of the rising cost of fuel, the challenge between revenue and welfare must be met.
"The challenge now is to find ways of balancing between the need to raise money to run the country while protecting the vulnerable members of society. A way out has to be found," Raila declared.
"The cost of fuel will touch all other areas and could cause food inflation and demands for higher pay by workers," he cautioned.
The ODM leader raised concern that such a move by the workers would hurt the employers.Oh his part, Kenneth stated: "Concerns of fuel costs are concerns of many Kenyans, whether they are jobless or not.
"I gave my views, on how to lower other fuel taxes to leverage and maintain status quo before the increase to avoid inflation," the former Gatanga MP indicated.
He also expressed his support for the idea that the government should consider the welfare of the citizens before considering other dynamics such as ways of raising revenue.
Kenneth further opined that the entire taxation regime of fuel needs to be looked into as a matter of priority.
He laid down the proposal that other fuel taxes should be lowered hence leveraging and maintaining the status quo before the increase to avoid inflation.
His sentiments, however, saw first Kiambu Governor William Kabogo pose: "What other fuel taxes Boss? Introducing VAT is a direct increase in tax of Ksh16 in every Ksh100 taxes should be lowered period".
