The office of the Director of Public Prosecution Noordin Haji has put the Labour Ministry under Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yattani on notice over child trafficking.
According to the Star, the DPP raised concern over the ministry's failure to do enough in reducing increased cases of child trafficking and exploitation.
Through Prosecutor Everlyne Achieng, the DPP revealed that the ministry lacks important data on reported cases.
Besides, Achieng noted that inadequate funds have also posed a challenge in the war against child trafficking.
"As you are aware, some of the affected children are traumatized. We need enough money to even hire psychologists to advice them," the prosecutor.
Achieng further stated that it is regrettable that some of the affected children are radicalized, which poses a security concern.
A report December 2017 report on child trafficking noted that foreigners with guardianship orders over Kenyan children have been spiriting them away under the guise of seeking medical attention.
Moreover, Courts and children officers were also cited as facilitators of child trafficking in the guise of seeking medical treatment contrary to a 2014 moratorium against moving Kenyan children away from the land of their birth.
The report on Progress on Implementation of the Moratorium on Inter-County and Resident Adoptions
also questioned the reason for offering all "available" cases for adoption to other countries yet there were local parents willing to take up the children.
The team found that some foreigners were offered more than one child for adoption within a span of two years, while the list of Kenyans waiting to adopt children was as high as 440.
The team attributed this to the fact the the foreigners paid more for adoption.
