Police Spokesman Charles Owino has apologised after the arrest of Chinese journalists on Wednesday.
Speaking on Thursday, Owino apologised for detaining journalists from Chinese' international English channel China Global Television Network (CGTN).
"The raid on the Chinese state-owned broadcaster was based on false information. "We sincerely apologise for the mishap,” he told Reuters.
He further stated that those who were apprehended were later released.
Heavily armed security personnel raided the CGTN's headquarters in Nairobi and detained some individuals for alleged immigration offences.
The Chinese embassy immediately raised concerns with the government prompting the release.
"This action by the Kenyan policy is part of a move to crack down on illegal immigration, and is neither aimed at nor limited to Chinese citizens," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying remarked.
"The Kenyan side has already apologised to the Chinese side about the improper law enforcement, and promised they will constrain the actions of police at the grassroots,” she was quoted by the publication.
Over the past few weeks the government has embarked on a programme aimed at reducing the number of illegal immigrants in the country.
The operation is overseen by Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.
