Rongo University student Sharon Otieno, who was kidnapped alongside Nation journalist Barrack Oduor, could have been raped before she was murdered, an officer who is part of the ongoing investigations revealed.
Speaking to the Standard, the officer divulged that after visiting the murder scene in Kodera forest, detectives found four condoms next to her lifeless body.
Sources indicated that there might have been a struggle as Sharon was killed based on the manner blood covered the leaves and grass at the scene.
According to an attendant at the Rachuonyo Hospital in Homa Bay mortuary, Sharon’s body was in a “nasty form”.
“There were several stab wounds on the back, ear and abdomen. The neck was broken,” stated one of the attendants.
Postmortem of the body is to be conducted on Friday to determine the cause of death.
Police have since tightened security at the Homa Bay Police Station where Migori Governor Okoth Obado's personal assistant Michael Oyamo was being held.
According to the DCI officer at the station, the police were not taking any chances after what happened in Nairobi where a suspect died while in police custody.
On Thursday, a team of about 10 detectives led by the Homa Bay County Directorate of Criminal Investigations Commander Daniel Wachira and the special homicide squad from Nairobi, inspected the murder the scene and collected samples.
Nation Journalist’s side of the story indicated that besides Oyamo, suspected of being involved in the murder, there were three other people involved in the kidnapping; the driver of the vehicle and two other people.
Leonard Katana, who is the Nyanza Regional County Commander stated that no arrests have been made.
Police leads indicate that the vehicle used to kidnap the two, which is thought to be a Toyata Wish, might have crossed the border into Tanzania.
Other sources indicated that the manhunt of the suspects had spread to Kayole, Nairobi where the suspects are thought to be hiding though no arrests have been made.
Oyamo’s fate is set to be known on Monday after the police obtained a court order to detain him and carry out more investigations.
Sharon’s relatives declined to speak to the journalist as everyone awaits the results of the postmortem.
