Ksh1.5 Million Plastic Surgery That Caused Beatrice Elachi's Impeachment

Members of the Nairobi County Assembly on Thursday revealed more details of what had pushed them to settle on impeaching the Speaker Beatrice Elachi.

The MCAs claimed Elachi had on a single occasion travelled to the US for a knee and plastic surgery using public resources.

Elachi is accused of spending at least Kshs1.5 Million believed to be public funds on the two procedures according to CIC insurance documents indicating her claims.

In a Thursday afternoon special sitting, 103 MCAs voted in favour of her removal with two opposing the move while two others abstained.

Waithaka MCA Antony Kiragu moved the motion alleging the speaker had sought to interfere with distinctive roles of the public service board and was acting in violation of the law.

"The speaker unilaterally, inappropriately and illegally usurped the functions of the public service board, thereby purporting to take certain actions which can only emanate from the board," stated Kiragu.

The leaders also accused Elachi of using her office to influence tender awarding and altering costs of the acquisition of the Speaker's residence whose cost had been capped at Shs100 Million.

The Thursday incident was the second bid to remove her from office after an earlier intervention by Jubilee party leadership saved her from the ouster.

The massive backing attracted by the impeachment motion depicted a united front against the speaker who could not even be rescued by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga's interventions.

Mr Odinga reportedly called the minority whip Peter Imwatok and also spoke to the Nairobi majority and minority leaders asking them to adjourn the sitting and pave way for negotiation to tackle their concerns.
