Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko issued a warning indicating that he might be forced to make a rushed decision in choosing a deputy governor if he is not given time.
Speaking during his late father’s anniversary, the Governor stated that he will nominate “another” Miguna if the public keeps piling pressure on him.
Sonko explained that he needed time to consult with the Jubilee Party and the party leader after the Nairobi County Assembly rejected his earlier nomination.
“Saa hii hakuna pressure ile wakati walinipea pressure nikawapatia Miguna. Mimi sitaki kupewa pressure nikipewa pressure nitawaletea Miguna mwingine muangushe kwa hivyo tutangoja Rais arudi tuconsult (Now there is no pressure, you previously piled pressure on me I nominated Miguna. If you do the same I will nominate another Miguna and you will reject him. Hence, we will wait until the President is back so that we consult)," he indicated.
The governor’s remarks were dismissed by the assembly that claimed he was buying time instead of making a decision.
The controversial governor’s remarks come a month after he revealed the four female candidates shortlisted for the position of the deputy governor.
The four female candidates included former Starehe MP Margaret Wanjiru, gender activist and insurance executive Agnes Kagure as well as lawyers Karen Nyamu and Jane Weru.
The four were shortlisted from a list of ten people who were nominated for the position.
Lawyer Miguna Miguna’s nomination was rejected by the County Assembly in May over the grounds that his Kenyan citizenship was revoked.
Miguna had been nominated to replace former Nairobi deputy governor Polycarp Igathe who he fell out with Governor Sonko.
The embattled Miguna rejected the offer on the basis that he was not consulted.
