DP William Ruto Announces Plan for Jubilee MPs on Fuel taxes

Deputy President William Ruto on Sunday defended the government's need for more resources in the accomplishing of its development agenda.

Speaking during a fundraiser in Gikondi, Nyeri, Ruto stated that he would engage with legislators especially from the Jubilee fraction and remind them of the agenda set out by government

“There are some individuals from the opposition who think we want additional taxes for corruption. We know where this country should go and the steps we should take.

“We will engage MPs, especially those from Jubilee, to remind them how the transformation agenda has been planned," he stated.

His sentiments come following an outcry from citizens over the 16 percent VAT tax on fuel with many called for it to be scrapped.

On his part, Amani National Congress (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi stated that the tax was meant to pay for stolen funds in the energy sector.

“But the most important thing is that we should get enough money to improve our infrastructure and other development projects.

“We have time and again cautioned against uncontrolled borrowing. Chickens have come home to roost and the government does not know where to turn to or what to do,” Mudavadi was quoted by the Star.

Earlier on Friday, DP Ruto assured that the government would resolve the current fuel prices adding that they were in talks with all parties involved to save the mwananchi from the high costs.

“The executive is in talks with MPs to resolve this issue amicably. We understand what the people are going through and have the responsibility to listen to you,” he stated in Kuria, Migori County.

He explained that they would balance Kenyans’ interests against development revenue.

“We’re a responsible government. We understand the interests of the people and shall find ways of looking for money to fund development while ensuring the common people are not overburdened. Rest assured this matter will be addressed soon,” he stated.
