Governor Mike Sonko Responds to MCAs Ultimatum to Return to City Hall Office

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Monday addressed his not working from City Hall raising concern of being poisoned in his designated office.

His statement comes days after Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) issued a two-week ultimatum to the County Head to cease operating the city's affairs from his home in Mua Hills, Machakos County.

Adamantly, Sonko maintained that he would not be moving his office to City Hall soon until certain elements that could endanger his life are neutralized.

"I want to dust my office. I know the dirtiness [sic] in my office, I have to clean the office, the sofas, replace the water in the fridge, and remove all the cups, nimalize kila kitu nirudi hapo (I can only return after a clean sweep has been done)"

Sonko's sentiments were riddled with suspicion as he added; "Naweza ingia hapo nishike meza, niume kucha nianguke nikufe (I can get into the office, I touch the table, bite a nail and within minutes, I fall and die)."

He pleaded with the MCAs to understand his predicament adding that his current situation did not affect the operations of his government.

“That one, they will have to understand me. I have reasons for not operating from that office. If there are bills to be signed into law I will so either from the office of the speaker, leader of majority or minority leader,” he explained.

Insisting on his respect for the county legislators, the governor stated that he would not be intimidated or blackmailed with impeachment threats.

“I have fought many battles to be where I am. I will not appoint a deputy governor within the 14 days as some are demanding," he added.
