Judge Rules on Freeing Michael Oyamo

The High Court on Wednesday directed that Migori Governor Okoth Obado’s Personal Assistant Michael Oyamo be detained for 14 more days at Muthaiga Police Station.

Oyamo was denied bail in the murder case of university student Sharon Otieno.

Judge Luka Kimaru stated: “All his rights must be upheld…any relatives visiting, counsel or his basic rights as food and access to basic amenities."

The High Court judge added: “After 14 days he should be brought to court either to be charged or released.”

Homicide detectives had taken Oyamo's DNA samples probing the killing of Sharon Otieno.

On Tuesday the aide to governor Obado was re-arrested moments after being freed by police in Homa Bay and flown to Nairobi.

There were plans to arraign Oyamo at the High Court in Homa Bay but he was moved to Nairobi after the public bayed for his blood during his appearance at the magistrate court.

Crowds formed outside the High Court, with locals pushing their way into the courtroom.

Oyamo is among persons who were last seen with Ms Otieno before her body was found at Kodera Forest in Oyugis, Homa Bay County, a day after she was kidnapped.

Nation journalist Barrack Oduor, who was abducted with Ms Otieno, escaped death after jumping out of the abductor’s moving vehicle.
