MCAs Sign Petition to Kick Out Governor

A governor in Western Kenya is facing a possible ouster after Members of the County Assembly initiated a move to impeach him.

The agitated Bungoma County MCAs on Tuesday stormed the governor Wycliffe Wangamati's office lamenting over delayed implementation of projects that had been promised a year since he ascended to power.

On Tuesday, operations at the County Assembly were grounded after the MCAs and several members of the public occasioned a protest demanding for the governor's audience.

At least 42 out of 63 MCAs had signed a petition to impeach Wangamati.

They skipped a special sitting of the assembly paralyzing the intended approval of the names of chief officers and other county staff for vetting.

The lawmakers accuse the governor of appointing his cronies and setting them up for rejection by the electorate in Bungoma county.

At the center of the disagreement is an alleged disbursement of Kshs34 Million to the wards for development.

The Tuti Marakaru MCA Joseph Nyongesa refuted claims that the money had been sent to the wards.

"He is setting us up against the public. We are going to ensure he leaves office before he brings us down," lamented Nyongesa.

His Saboti Ward counterpart Wamusai Simiyu held that "We are surprised that one year down the line the governor has not initiated. He is appointing his cronies."

Wangamati through his director of Communication Tim Machi termed the protests as purely streets protests that could not be responded to.

Machi challenged the MCAs to use the proper avenues in channeling their grievances other than protests.
