Demolition of Taj Mall began early on Saturday morning amid government efforts to reclaim illegally acquired land.
The owner of the mall Rameshchandra Govino Gorasia had been given 14 days to bring down the property. down.
Reports revealed that the demolitions began at about 6:30am on Saturday with police guarding and blocking the public from the mall.
The mall is one of several structures that have been brought down as the government seeks to reclaim road reserves and riparian land.
The operation is being overseen by the Nairobi Regeneration Team after a vacation notice issued by the multi-sectoral committee on unsafe structures had already lapsed.
Last month, Mr Gorasia held a presser where he dared the government to demolish the shopping complex insisting he would stay put.
"I am saying this openly to any authority, I am not going to remove this structure, not even to my death! If they want to remove it, they come and do it themselves," Gorasia stated.
"Whoever is ordering this demolition stop hiding, come out and face me, I am not scared of anything," he added.
The government kicked off the demolition of illegal buildings encroaching on public land in the recent past.
Some of those that were brought down last month include South End Mall, Java House and Shell Petrol Station in Kileleshwa as well as a section of Oshwal Centre in Parklands.
