A pack of sniffer dogs popularly known as k-9 unit has been busted at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
The dogs attached to Kenya Revenue Authority's (KRA) custom department are trained to carry out surveillance of harmful products and counterfeits at the points of entry.
However, when put to task on Monday during a press briefing, the K-9 sniffer dogs could not detect planted goods.
Besides, the dogs sniffed past explosive-making substances and bags containing a variety of illegal drugs.
In a video seen by Kenyans.co.ke, one dog missed the suspect bag and settled on a different bag all together raising questions on their effectiveness.
At some point, the dogs appeared to signal that all the bags were clear of illegal commodities despite some having suspect material planted inside.
The three narcotic and explosive busting sniffer-dogs are said to be fed at a monthly cost of Ksh60,000
Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Enforcement Manager Kamau Ng'ang'a noted that transnational organized crime had necessitated the employment of the K-9 unit.
The officials blamed the dogs' inability to sniff out the illicit products of their young age.
The three join a fourth German Shepherd donated by America to beef security ahead of New York-Nairobi direct flights.
