Devolution CS Eugene Wamalwa Saves Cyrus Jirongo From Jail After Depositing Mercedes Benz as Surety

Former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo who had been in police custody walked to freedom after Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa managed to secure his release.

On Thursday, CS Wamalwa deposited his sleek Mercedes Benz as surety for Jirongo who vied for the Presidential seat during the 2017 General Election.

Deputy Registrar Elizabeth Tanui on Wednesday directed that the politician remains in custody until 1 pm when he was expected to have raised money for his release.

The court directed that the flamboyant politician be taken to remand prison should he fail to pay the Ksh5 million which businessman Bryan Yongo wanted him jailed for failing to settle a Ksh20 million debt.

The warrant for Jirongo's arrest was issued by the court on August 6 and the OCS Muthangari police station had been directed to execute it speedily.

Jirongo had earlier agreed to pay the debt promising to give it priority after selling his 500 acres of land in Ruai, Nairobi County, and another five acres in Kisumu.

He had also been expecting compensation from the Nairobi government for a plot in Industrial Area which he was owed.

Jirongo's failure to settle the debt prompted Yongo to apply for warrants for his arrest asking that he be committed to civil jail for failing to pay the debt which was advanced in 2014.

In 2015, the two had agreed that the amount would be settled in three installments where Jirongo was to pay Ksh5 million by October 15, 2015.

Jirongo was then to follow up with installments of Ksh5 million and the final one within 60 days but he failed to honour the consent, according to court papers by Yongo.
