Mama Lucy Hospital Denies Governor Mike Sonko Dismantled Coolers to Donate to Pumwani

Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital in Nairobi on Thursday spoke on allegations that Governor Mike Sonko had dismantled cooler boxes to donate to Pumwani Maternity Hospital.

In a video seen by Kenyans.co.ke, Mama Lucy superintendent Dr Musa Mohamed dismissed the reports and took journalist around the morgue showing their coolers intact.

Besides, Dr Musa dismissed claims that they had transferred an infant's body to the embattled Pumwani Hospital.

"I want to make a clarification, there is no way we can transfer a dead infant to another hospital when we have a 32 beds mortuary and all chambers are functional," the superintendent stated.

The medic further noted that even when making patient referrals, they only make transfers to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

The statement from Mama Lucy Hospital came shortly after reports alleged that Sonko's donation of cooler boxes had been picked from the facility.

"As we plan for immediate improvement of maternal care at Pumwani Maternity Hospital, I have personally donated cooler boxes to be installed in a temporary mortuary at the facility," Governor Sonko stated.

Several leaders including Senator Johnson Sakaja decried that although Sonko did well by unearthing the rot at Pumwani Hospital, he should not run away from his responsibilities given that health is a devolved function.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Union (KMPDU) Secretary-General Dr Ouma Oluga raised concern over political interference in the health sector.

"The country and the politicians are interfering too much with the professional autonomy of doctors. This is bad for the patients," Dr Oluga noted.
