The Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Noordin Haji on Thursday asked the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet to launch investigations into agencies that may have been involved in the Fort Ternan tragedy.
In a letter seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the Haji instructed the IG to widen the scope of investigations that would establish those who were to blame for the accident that caused 56 deaths.
The letter was referenced, "Investigation into the Fatal Accident at Fort Ternan Within Kericho County" and dated October 11.
"I hereby direct that you cause investigation into the matter to determine the persons who may have, through acts of commission or omission, contributed either directly or indirectly into the occurrence of the same.
"The investigation should be extended to cover all agencies of government charged with the responsibility of ensuring safety on our roads as well as the owners of the subject motor vehicle
"Once the investigation is complete, do forward the file to us immediately for appropriate directions," the DPP's letter read in part.
The tragic accident occurred on the morning of October 10, 2018, and was ascribed to overloading and speeding.
Investigators at the scene recovered an insurance sticker that further indicated that the vehicle's cover had expired in July 2018, therefore, the vehicle was being driven without a cover.
Later, it emerged that the driver of the vehicle was a 72-year-old man only identified as Lucas.
