KNH Nurses Strike Over Assault on Staff

Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) nurses downed their tools on Monday to protest an attack on one colleague who is admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.

During the presser on Monday morning, Deputy Director of KNH Thomas Mutie stated that the victim was in a stable condition after being attacked over the death of a 17-year-old boy named Elisha Ouko Juma.

According Mutie, the hospital had earlier on Saturday morning informed the next of kin, who was a brother, over the passing of their patient.

Speaking to the media at the start of the strike, he noted that there was a scuffle with a nurse at the medication desk while the colleague had left to prepare the body for the viewing.

“Moments later, the staff were attracted by screams from the nursing desk, when the ensuing scuffle was contained, it was established that one of the nurses had been assaulted by the deceased patient’s relative.” the rep noted.

Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) vice chairman Moses Chirchir reported that the assailant attacked the nurse by strangling her.

Mutie further revealed that the victim lost consciousness and was rushed to the High Dependency Unit.

The unidentified assailants are in the police custody waiting to be arraigned in court after the nurse and her colleagues recorded statements.

The rep called upon patients and the entire public to accept medical outcomes urging “customers to extend the same courtesy and mutual respect as they would expect from us.”
