4 Conditions Set by Aviation Workers Ahead of Launch of US Direct Flights

Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) on Tuesday gave conditions to be met before the planned launch of the direct flights from Nairobi to the US.

Secretary General Moss Ndiema stated that certain conditions need to be met before they give the workers the go-ahead for the much-expected launch on October 28.

The conditions the workers demanded included: not to be assigned duties for more than 15 hours, be accorded facilities on board, be allowed flight time of between 17 and 21 hours and a pay of Ksh 50,000 for every hour extended on duty.

There was some anxiety on Monday after claims of a planned strike that aimed to put on hold the unveiling of the direct flights to New York.

Ndiema however, clarified that there were no intentions to sabotage the inaugural flight set for Sunday.

"KAWU is supportive of KQ, KAWU is not sabotaging New York flights, there is no boycott.

"KAWU has not issued a strike notice," stated  Ndiema.

Ahead of the inaugural flight, two Kenyan entrepreneurs, Shirlene Nafula and Evans Wadongo, are set to be part of the delegation that will include President Uhuru Kenyatta travelling on the maiden flight.

In August, JKIA achieved the last point departure status (LPD) that allows the airport to enable the direct flights hence, attracted international attention, leading to the visit by CNN Business Anchor Richard Quest to the country where he will cover and be part of the first flight to US.
