Mike Sonko's Plan to Buy Ksh300 Million Worth of Clothes

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is planning to buy uniform worth Ksh300 million for the inspectorate department staff who helped the county collect Ksh29.5 million in the last financial year through court fines, enforcement and impounding of vehicles.

According to Business Daily, the plan is set to be implemented in the financial year 2019/20.

"This will enhance identification while on duty. It will also improve county image and employee satisfaction," City Hall says in its County Annual Development Plan (CADP) for 2019/20.

The uniform includes identification numbers similar to those of the Police Service, identification badges and boots.

The new uniform is expected to make it easier for the public to identify workers charged with collecting parking fees and clamping down vehicles that flout various regulations.

City Hall further notes that the move will help "to curb incidences of impersonation by some members of the public".

2,000 uniforms have allegedly been already purchased for the inspectorate workers with a similar plan having been floated under the Evans Kidero government in June 2016.

The inspectorate department is facing bigger challenges including under-staffing, falling well below the United Nations recommended ratio of one worker for every 400 people in the city.

This has struggled to enforce city bylaws due to the low staff numbers with 300 additional officers recruited in June 2016.

Under-staffing has seen rogue matatu operators flout traffic rules including brazenly dropping and picking passengers in non-designated areas.

Besides, boda-boda operators have on numerous occasions defied orders to operate in specific spots outside the city centre.
