KPLC on Wednesday evening asked its customers to be ready for the shutdown of its Prepaid System to allow for the implementation of the newly adjusted electricity tariffs.
KPLC advised customers to purchase power tokens before midnight to avoid being affected by the 14-hour shutdown of the tokens dispatch system.
The upgrade is aimed at aligning the system for the implementation of the new tariffs announced by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) CEO Pavel Oimeke on Wednesday.
"Our customers on the prepaid system will not be able to vend for electricity tokens during the shutdown which is expected to last for 14 hours until tomorrow afternoon (1st November 2018, 2 pm)," KPLC cautioned in a statement.
ERC had earlier in the day announced that the cost of power for domestic consumers was reduced by Ksh.2 and that of the small commercial consumer by Ksh.5.
"The Commission has reviewed the Domestic Customer category by increasing the Lifeline threshold from the current 10kWh to 100kWh and further reducing their charge rate from Ksh 12/kWh to Ksh 10/kWh," announced Oimeke.
Oimeke further noted that; "the Lifeline Tariff is meant to accommodate more households in informal settlements, urban, peri-urban areas and rural areas to cushion them from the increased cost of living."
The changes take effect on November 1, 2018. This means customers will pay Ksh2 less for every kilowatt of power consumed in the period starting in November this year.
This is the second time the commission has made an effort to lower the electricity cost per unit this year.
